Fishing Line Recycling
As outdoor enthusiasts, we have an obligation to take care of the marine environments we love. Not just for us, but for future generations to enjoy as well. It is estimated that monofilament line takes 600 years to break down once discarded! This means that monofilament line can cause problems throughout the environment when it is lost during fishing (e.g., when cutting loose a snagged lure) or improperly discarded overboard.
You can do your part to protect our lake and area environments by properly disposing of your recreational fishing line. The first monofilament recycling station on Logan Martin Lake was set up at Lakeside Park in Pell City in November 2012. This effort is part of the Logan Martin Lake Protection Association’s outreach, in cooperation with the St. Clair County Soil and Water Conservation District to protect both wildlife and boat propellers as well.
What do we do with the collected fishing line? LMLPA ships the old fishing line to Berkley Conservation. Since 1990, the Berkley Conservation Institute, with the help of anglers everywhere, has recycled more than 9 million miles worth of fishing line. That's enough line to fill two reels for every angler in America.

Please do not put old and discarded fishing line in the trash or waste dumpster as wildlife can become entangled or attempt to eat the old line. Each year, more than 100,000 marine mammals die from ingesting debris or becoming entangled in fishing lines, nets, and other types of derelict fishing gear. You can do your part to stop this by recycling your fishing line. If no recycling station is nearby, please cut the line into 12" sections, place in a zip lock bag and dispose.

If you would like for LMLPA to consider installing a Recycling Station at your marina or public boat ramp, reach out to LMLPA.
